Joyce Overholtzer presented a Lecture/Demonstration entitled “Summer Impressions”. She is a Riji of Sogestu school of Ikebana. She started studying Sogetsu School in 1977 in New York State, became a certified teacher and began teaching classes and exhibiting in shows. She is a past president and an active member of the local chapter of Ikebana International and is also a member and past Director of The Metropolitan Washington DC Area Branch of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana.
Donna Scott presented a Lecture/Demonstration entitled “Ikebana: Harmony Within Our Environment”. She is a master of Ichiyo school of Ikebana. She is a past president of The Atlanta Bonsai Society and a past president of Ikebana International Atlanta where she is currently serving as Treasurer. She is a student in the Ichiyo School of Ikebana, serves as the 1st Vice President of the Ichiyo Atlanta Chapter. She conducted a workshop entitled “Mingei” following the demonstration.
Ikebana of Richmond member, Junko Liesfeld presented a lecture entitled “Shibori, Kasuri, Yuzen.. The Art Form of Kimono Fabrics". She focused on the history of Kimono, trends with colors and patterns at different times, children and men’s Kimono, and Kimono makers who are trying to keep traditional weaving, dying, and embroidery alive.
Member Showcase: 18 arrangements were on display for the Member Showcase; 4 from the Ikenobo School, 4 from the Ohara School, 5 from the Sogetsu School, 4 from the Ichiyo School and 1 from Sangetsu school. Members of Ikebana of Richmond, Janice Whitehead (Ikenobo school), Linda Taylor (Ohara school), Paula Nachman (Sogetsu school) and Helen Bunch (Ichiyo school) presented a demonstration entitled "Hana Kago and Ikebana".
Young Lee Oh presented the Ellen Gordon Allen Lecture/Demonstration entitled “The Glory of the Season". She is a 1st Term Master of the Ohara school of Ikebana International. She studied under Master Matsuo Tomita in New York for 30 years and has taken masters classes in Japan. She conducted a workshop entitled "Hana-Kanade" following the demonstraton and 2 workshops entitled "Moribana, Water Reflecting Style" and "Heika - Arrangement in Tall Container" on the following day.
Cecil Uyehara, a certified teacher in standard, semi-cursive scripts and Kamijo Shinzan style presented a demonstration of calligraphy, then read Haiku in Japanese. Jane Redmon, Rigi, Sogetsu School of Ikebana read the translated Haiku in English and presented a demonstration of flower arranging following the Haiku contents. They conducted a workshop entitled "Haiku and Ikeana" following the demonstration.
Kika Shibata presented a demonstration entitled "Infinity". She received her teacher's certificate from the Sogetsu School in 1967. In March 1989, she earned the prestigious title of RIJI, the highest degree. She conducted a workshop entitled "The Wonderful World of Leaves. Creativity with Different Types of Leaves" following the demonstration and will conduct 2 workshops entitled "Creativity with Curly Willow" and "Making Baskets with Midollino Sticks" on the following day.
Libby Haynes, Paula Nachman and Annette Ernst of Sogetsu school presented a demonstration using Midollino and wooden chopsticks.
Laura Anne Brooks (Ikenobo school), Judy Sheldon (Ohara school), Beth Gillispie (Sogetsu school) and Alice Litchfield, Helen Bunch and Shirley Woodle (Ichiyo school) presented a demonstration entitled "Introduction to Four Schools of Ikebana". 19 arrangements were on display for the Member Showcase; 6 from the Ikenobo School, 5 from the Ohara School, 4 from the Sogetsu School and 4 from the Ichiyo School. Libby Haynes, Fourth Grade Teacher of Sogetsu conducted a workshop entitled “Unconventional Materials“ following the demonstration.
